Peter Ryan

Security Consultant, IOC

Mr. Ryan is a former senior Australian and British civil servant with more than 40 years general leadership and management experience.

He has international experience in intelligence, counter terrorist planning and operations and Special Forces anti terrorist operations, including training and exercises for aircraft and cruise ship high jacking, responding to CBRN attacks, suicide bombing and critical incident recovery and consequence management in a number of countries. He has experience in policing and security operations in Europe, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, China, Taiwan, West Africa, Central America, Australia, Canada, Russia and the USA.

Dr Ryan is considered to be a world expert on security for major public events; he was the overall security commander for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and since that time has been the security advisor to the International Olympic Committee for all Olympic Games. He was the principal consultant to Athens 2004, Turin 2006, Beijing 2008 Organising Committees and provided advice to Vancouver 2010, and currently to London 2012 and Sochi 2014 as part of his IOC responsibilities. He has also been involved in security planning for the West Asian and Asian Games in Qatar; the World Games in Taiwan and other large sporting and political events.

Through his service as a Chief Constable and National Director of Police Training in the UK and Commissioner of Police in New South Wales, Australia, he has led large, complex organisations through major change programmes, involving technological innovations and major cultural and organisational change. He was formerly the Founding President of the European Association of Police Colleges and Chairman of the Interpol Training Committee.

As the security consultant for an international engineering and design consultancy, he worked on large new build urban design projects and critical national infrastructure facilities in the UK and internationally.

He is a graduate of the FBI National Executive Institute, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management, a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Dr Ryan is a frequent speaker at international seminars on counter terrorism and security. He has lectured at a number of Universities including the USA and Australia and was a visiting professor of the Swiss Institute of Technology, Lausanne.
